Specific models? Stepping away from the mainstream fare we come to a car that makes a very smart used buy. The Tiguan 4x4 was introduced back in 2007, it appeared near the top of the compact 4x4 price bracket just in time for this market to implode. As such, you'll find early Tiguans for less than you might well imagine. The engineering is rock solid and the styling looks as fresh today as it did four years ago. It's a great alternative to a new Korean SUV.

There's also value to be found in the Fox city car, early Touareg SUVs and the Passat (2005-2010), also looks a particularly smart piece of used business. Smaller Volkswagen saloons such as the Bora and Jetta have long attracted savvy buyers who get all the attributes of a Golf, bar the hatchback of course, at massively reduced used prices. There are those who prefer having a boot and for them the decision makes itself. My final tip is a car that could well become collectible and is a hoot to drive. Prices for the Corrado VR6 coupe are currently on the floor with tidy examples changing hands for around £3,000. That is a genuine steal.
