Logic would dictate that the vehicle manufacturer that consistently wins customer satisfaction surveys would be one where it would be hard to find a decent used car bargain. Fortunately for used car buyers, logic sometimes goes out of the window and when shopping for a used Lexus, if you know what to look out for you'll find some great deals. First up is the distinctly underappreciated GS450h. While a 335bhp 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine might not seem entirely relevant in this day and age, thanks to the hybrid assistance of its electric motor you'll get the best of both worlds. A top speed of 155mph may be limited but 0-62mph in just 5.9s will outdrag a Porsche Boxster while also delivering only 180g/km of CO2 and fuel figures nudging 40mpg. With used prices now dipping under £11,000, it's a smart piece of business.

There's also value to be found in the IS compact executive model. With an unparalleled reputation in class for quality, the IS series makes a rock-solid used buy. If you're planning on covering higher mileages, and many buyers of this sort of car do just that, search out the IS220d diesel, built from 2005. An early 2006-plated example will typically cost around £7,500 dependent on mileage, trim and condition, naturally, although leggier examples can be found from little over £5,000.

Both the LS luxury saloon and the RX sports utility vehicle also offer up some canny buys but an intriguing purchase is the SC430 luxury convertible. When it was sold new, it was compared rather unfavourably to the Mercedes SL. These days, with 2001 model year cars retailing from around £7,500 it looks absolutely sterling value. If the idea of a beautifully equipped and meticulously finished car for high days and holidays holds some appeal, don't rule out the SC430.
