Some marques can give your used car commentator a bit of a tough time when tasked with selecting used bargains. Not Citroën. It's a job to know what to leave out, but if you're looking for something cheap but characterful, this should be one of your first ports of call. We'll kick off with the smallest Citroën, the C1. Built in collaboration with Toyota and Peugeot, the C1 enjoyed a big advantage over the Aygo and 107 respectively by being the only one to offer a diesel engine on its launch in 2005. These diesel models are sought after by first time drivers but you should still be able to find bargains.

Our thoughts on Citroen used cars

The C5 Estate is a Citroën of the old school, with fancy hydropneumatic suspension and acres of room inside. Big soft seats and a magic carpet ride provide ample recompense for the rather unexceptional interior. Just make sure that the suspension is in perfect working order before buying and insist on a 2.2-litre HDi diesel engine. I guarantee you'll double-take when you see the prices you can pick one of these up for.

In the market for a smart SUV? The Citroën C-Crosser might be one of the biggest bargains in the whole sector. A rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander, the C-Crosser is better looking than the Mitsubishi and its sibling, the Peugeot 4007. Avoid the rather pitiful 2.4-litre petrol and look to the 2.2-lire diesel, especially in value-packed VTR guise, and you'll have a certain bargain. One last recommendation for hot hatch buyers is what might just be the best value cheapie on sale today – the Citroën Xsara Coupe VTS. Sharing the same underpinnings as the Peugeot 306 GTI, the Xsara offers 167bhp and extremely lively handling. Few hatches on sale today are anything like as much fun to drive.
