Our thoughts on Rolls Royce used cars
Let's dive right in with the Phantom. It's the biggest and the best and, to the surprise of many given its rarity, its been with us since 2003. Any Phantom Phantom should have been maintained regardless of cost. It should not have borderline legal tyres or minor bodywork damage. The major mechanicals and electricals have proven rugged and the depth of engineering is impeccable. Even the umbrella holder in the rear doors of the saloon is equipped with a fan to prevent the fabric mildewing. Opening book value? You'll need £100,000 for a car that's got a few motorway miles under its belt, with £125,000 netting you something a bit tauter. As ever, you buy on conditions and look for attractive options such as custom leather upholstery or special paint finishes according to taste.
The smaller Ghost has a lot to commend it. In fact, because of its status as the 'lesser' Rolls model, values aren't as sturdy as the all-you-can-eat Phantom. Thing is, these cars are still fairly new and you'll need at least £180,000 for a 2010 car. Given that it's still on the steep part of the depreciation curve, that's not going to be cheap motoring. Perhaps better value is delivered by a Silver Seraph. With classic Rolls-Royce styling mated to the efficiency of a 5.4-litre all-aluminium BMW V12, this is a car that's just disarmingly charming. With 2002 models priced at around £50,000 this gets my vote as the top value used Rolls-Royce purchase.
