The Vauxhall Vectra seems as good a place as any to start. Late shape cars built between 2005 and 2008 are a particularly good buy. They make fantastic motorway cars, being smooth, refined and comfortable. There's plenty of space inside too, especially if you opt for the vast estate. The 253bhp VXR sports model might tempt you but for most people one of the 1.9-litre CDTi diesels will better fit their needs. The best engine in the line up is the magnificent 174bhp 3.0-litre diesel though. What's more, it's not a well known vehicle so you'll find bargains. There aren't many mile munchers to rival it but do buy a post-2004 car as early ones had issues with cylinder liners. Similar advice applies if you'd prefer the shape of the long-wheelbase Signum model.

Our thoughts on Vauxhall used cars
Other Vauxhall models that look to offer very good value at the moment are the first of the second generation Agilas introduced in 2008, the old Vauxhall Astra Bertone coupe, 2007 model year Corsas and one that many people will have overlooked the five-seat Antara SUV. This was launched in 2007 with the choice of an aged 2.4-litre petrol and a far preferable 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine. Trim levels of E, S and SE were available from launch but the range was slimmed down over the next few years.
The 2.4-litre petrol engine bit the bullet fairly quickly and by 2010, the diesel engine was offered only in Exclusiv and SE trims. Early Antara diesels with sensible mileages now look very smart. If you need moire seats, its sister vehicle, the Chevrolet Captiva, answers that call. Given that the Chevy was cheaper from new, it's unsurprising that Antara sales were slow. Still, some cars work a lot better as a used proposition than new and the Antara is certainly one of them.
