It used to be so simple. If you shopping for a used MINI the choice was relatively simple. Bargains were easily found although the cars weren't always cheap, you got strong value for money. Then the MINI range started to balloon and the choice got a whole lot more complicated. We'll start by keeping things very simple. The first of the MIN Cooper models makes a great used buy, offering usefully more go than the standard MINI one but without a big fuel consumption penalty. These look cheap at present, with the first of the 2001 cars trading at comfortably less than £3,000. That's a steal.

Our thoughts on Mini used cars

Should you be able to slake its not inconsiderable thirst, the original MINI Cooper S is a wild ride. That fuel consumption has depressed used prices and £3,750 can pick you up something decidedly reasonably. With its manic supercharger whine, beefy steering and sheer pace, the Cooper S feels a good deal more special and exotic than its modest price tag would suggest. Somehow I don't think we'll see its like again. Figures? Think rest to sixty in 7.2s on the way to 138mph and handling that'll have you cackling from apex to apex.

If you're a little wary of buying a car which necessitates quite so many garage stops, look no further than the Cooper D. You could go for one of the early cars but the 75bhp Toyota-sourced 1.4-litre engine is a bit puny. The later 'R56' series cars are a whole lot more fun with a choice of two 1.6-litre diesel engines, the 112bhp or the 143bhp engine found in the Cooper SD. The 112bhp unit offers fully 270Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,000rpm - more than a Cooper S hot hatch – and you'll find these in decent numbers on the used market. Just make sure the previous keeper ticked the option box marked 'air conditioning'.
