The sheer range of Toyotas built in the last ten years means that it's not difficult to track down some great used bargains. Although you can locate some very cheap cars, and these may well prove to be reliable – this is Toyota – the best buys are cars that might not have fired the public's imagination in the way the manufacturer intended. In prime position amongst these is the Corolla Verso. Introduced in 2001, this five-seat mini-MPV is hugely versatile and cheap to run if you can track one down with the D-4D diesel engine. This model was replaced in 2004 by a seven-seater version. Production switched from Japan to Turkey and the earlier second-generation cars aren't quite as well built.

Our thoughts on Toyota used cars

The Land Cruiser is another used buy that will run and run. You can buy these very cheaply but early cars were a little agricultural. That all changed in 2003 when a more sophisticated car was introduced, powered by a 161bhp 3.0-litre diesel. This model ran until 2009 but in 2005 the engine got a tweak that yielded usefully more torque. A post 2005 Land Cruiser makes a brilliant choice for towing or green laning and its image is a lot less 'try hard' than many of the current crop of big 4x4s. It remains one of the most easily recommendable used buys on the entire market.

Toyota's reputation for producing sporty vehicles has dipped in recent years but let's not overlook the last Celica, built between 1999 and 2007. It's good looking, it drives well, its reliable and you get a fantastic Yamaha engine under the bonnet. The 140bhp version drives sweetly, but many will prefer the small premium required to net the 190bhp car which possesses the most manic zing as the variable valve timing and lift system helps the engine to rev to a 9000rpm redline. That party trick is genuinely giggle-inducing and well worth the very modest asking price.
