The Suzuki line up may well be awash with cheap cars when shopping used but rather than run through the lot of them, I've selected a few possible bargains that can help narrow things down for you. First up is the Jimny. Choose a 2005 car and you'll get an 85bhp 1.3-litre engine and it's a hardy little beast, capable of genuinely tough off-road activity. As with any off-road vehicle, it pays to check them out carefully. Inspect the body panelling and paintwork for dents and scratches, ensure the underbody and suspension are undamaged and inspect the exhaust system. The shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system can be abused, as can the low-range gearing, so ensure they are working properly on the test drive. Otherwise check for a fully stamped up service history.

Our thoughts on Suzuki used cars

Cut from rather more sophisticated cloth is the Grand Vitara and 2005 was also a key milestone for this enduring line. This car proved something of a revelation. More mature, better built and far bigger than its predecessor, it was a massive step forward. Available in both three and five door guise, the only fly in the ointment was a rather mix and match approach to body styles and engines and it wasn’t until March 2007 that Suzuki teamed the 1.9 DDiS diesel engine with the chunky three-door body. Sales have been strong, many buyers realising that here is a vehicle with capabilities beyond the compact 4x4 norm. It makes a great used buy, especially if you can find a low mileage car that has been used for school run and shopping duties.

The third pick is a Suzuki that took some time to register in the public consciousness. The Swift Sport is an infectious little character, arriving in October 2006. The Sport is powered by a 125bhp engine and gets to 60mph of just 8.9s, making the Swift quicker off the mark than a MINI Cooper or a Citroën C2 VTR. Drive in a more measured fashion and you might match Suzuki’s quoted combined fuel consumption figure of 37.7mpg. Just don’t bank on it as its throttle pedal is an addictive thing. Fortunately you can pick one up from around £4,500 so you needn't be too paranoid about watching the pennies.
