Demand is strong and genuine bargains are hard to come by but the investment is worthwhile, given that the Land Rover range has improved so rapidly in the past few years. This is the reason why we're not delving too far back into history when selecting our used picks. The Discovery 3 is about as old as you should reasonably choose. With a fair amount of stock to choose from and a reliable, if somewhat slow, 2.7-litre turbodiesel engine providing the go, the third-generation Disco is a stalwart selection.

Our thoughts on Land Rover used cars
Likewise, when choosing a Freelander, look no further than the later Freelander 2. Whereas the original had a rather patchy reliability record and some underwhelming engines, the Freelander 2 is made from sterner stuff and the TD4_e, a model from 2008 is one to look out for. This reduced the diesel engine's CO2 from 194 to 179g/km and features a Stop/Start system that cuts the engine when the car is stationary - a first in the SUV sector. This Stop/Start technology was rolled out to all manual models in 2009. Again, you'll need to spend a little time and legwork if you want to land a bargain.
The Range Rover Sport needs little in the way of introduction, but it's still not widely known that this vehicle is a Discovery in a posh frock. To some buyers this means getting Range Rover-style sleekness with Discovery reliability and it is a far beefier package than its footballer's wife image might suggest. Go for a 2005 2.7 TDV6 for the best value or, if you have very deep pockets, take a punt on the ballistic supercharged 4.2-litre V8 petrol.
