Getting a lot of metal for your money is usually motoring writer speak for being saddled with a cheap lemon. While there's scope for buying badly when looking for a used Jaguar, follow a few basic pointers and you should land yourself a reliable bargain. The first port of call is the S-TYPE. This vehicle didn't get off to the best start in life, but was so ruthlessly developed during its lifetime that later cars are, from the inside at least, virtually unrecognisable compared to the originals. Go for a post 2004 2.7-litre diesel, preferably in Plus trim and you'll have yourself one heck of a motor.

Our thoughts on Jaguar used cars

As technically impressive as the current Jaguar XJ is, there exists a whole generation of buyers who see the previous car, built from 2003 to 2010, as the last of the 'real' XJ models. My choice here would again be for the diesel, introduced in 2005 but go for one built between then and 2007, when the rather blousy side gills were fitted to the aluminium body. A modest mile 2006 example would set you back around £14,000, or in other words Ford Fiesta money for what is still one of the best-riding cars money can buy.

While the original Jaguar XK seems to get better and better looking as the years roll by, it's impossible not to give a solid recommendation to its successor, as it was so much better built, more practical and miles better to drive. With prices for solid used examples now dipping below £20,000, it's certainly tempting. You'll need to be honest with yourself about ongoing running costs but if you have that sort of money available for a feel-good purchase, the Jaguar XK satisfies like little else.
