The name of Renault is synonymous with some fantastic cheap cars. Whole generations have been weaned on top value tackle such as the Renault 5 and the Clio, so picking the top used bargains is a big ask. There's a lot to choose from. The Clio range offers up all manner of value but I'd go a step bigger and a heap sportier with the Mégane Renaultsport R26. This is a quite phenomenal used buy at the moment. The love-it-or-hate-it styling has been enough to deter a few but there's absolutely no debate when it comes to the driving experience. It's fair to say that cars such as this effectively rendered the whole 4x4 rally replica market dead in the water and when early R26s are available for as little as £6,500, it's very hard to refuse.

Our thoughts on Renault used cars

Of course, the up and at 'em Mégane R26 might not fit your family needs. If something bigger and more versatile is required, you could do a lot worse than look for a Renault Koleos. Renault isn't well known for its SUVs and the Koleos was a heavily restyled Nissan X-Trail, itself a super 4x4. As a result, you can pick up low mileage Koleos models for very little and they're solidly engineered and, to this eye at least, rather handsome. You'll also get that rare thing: exclusivity without all the downsides.

Another vehicle that often gets overlooked as buyers make a beeline for the Clio is the Modus and its bigger Grand Modus sibling. Although the Modus isn't the most exciting car to drive, it offers a surprising amount of practicality and , if you opt for the Grand, legroom. The clever Triptic sliding rear bench is key to this. Aim for the 80bhp 16-valve 1.5 dCi diesel and you should have a smallish car that's cheap to run and painless to own.
