Yes, we know there are some star performer in the M-B firmament and these models attract a horde of willing bidders. If you're prepared to look at cars that have managed to escape the glare of the spotlight a little, you'll find very good value for money. Take the A-Class for instance. This suffered from the twin stigmas of being expensive and the negative publicity of its 'elk test' failure when new. Mercedes worked quickly to fix the stability issue but didn't address the car's high price. With novel engineering and ingenious packaging, the A-Class ought to have been a winner but it was only modestly successful. Used examples look excellent value, with great fuel economy from the smaller petrol models meaning you often won't need to fork out for a diesel. Avoid the 'sporty' models as they rather defeat the car's purpose.

Our thoughts on Mercedes Benz used cars
Another smaller Mercedes that's well worth looking at is the B-Class. The used market is only slowly cottoning onto quite what a bargain early B-Class models represent so now is a good time to get in quick and scalp a deal. Moving up the range, the R Class with the 2006 R320 CDI diesel looking very attractive value with prices now starting to dip below £13,000 for higher mileage cars. Look for the 'L' designated long wheelbase version when shopping for one of these. It makes all the difference to space in the back.
When a model is replaced by a spangly new one, values of the outgoing car can take a sharp dip. Even Mercedes isn't immune to this law of the used car jungle and right now the CLS saloon and the previous shape SLK are ripe for the taking as owners trade in old models against new ones.
