There's a long lineage of great small cars to choose from and a few select bigger ones too, so netting a bargain used car shouldn't prove difficult. We'll start at the compact end of the spectrum with the loveable 107. This city scoot is tougher than its cutesy looks suggest. While you won't get a whole lot of choice when it comes to powerplants with a choice of 1.0-litre petrol or 1.4 diesel. The petrol engine offers by far the best value here and you should easily find a modest miler on a 2006 plate for around £3,500.

Our thoughts on Peugeot used cars

The launch of the far superior 207 put a dampener on Peugeot 206 values and there are a number of cheap examples but give them a good look over as they can get very tired very quickly. The bigger 308 is a better bet and now that a facelifted version of this car is in the dealers, there are some good picks from the early range. Keep going and you come to the 407. This is at its best in big 407 SW estate guise with distinctive styling and some really long-legged diesel engines. Don't discount the 1.6HDI diesel model. It's a great motorway cruiser but make sure the front suspension ball joints aren't clunking when you turn the wheel – a common 407 affliction.

My final pick is a car that might not win many beauty contests but is nevertheless a supremely competent all-rounder. The Peugeot 4007 is the SUV the used market forgot and as a result you'll get late models at knockdown prices. Engineered by Mitsubishi, the 4007 is supremely reliable. All models get the same 156bhp 2.2-litre diesel so they don't cost a fortune in day to day costs and the 5+2 seating arrangement can cater for most needs. It's a lot of car for not a lot of wedge.
