Better known as Top Gear's Reasonably Priced Car, it's better than reasonably priced as a used proposition. With sound build quality and decent equipment levels, you can't go too far wrong, especially with one of the grunty 138bhp 2.0-litre diesels.

Our thoughts on Kia used cars
The Sportage is one of those Kias that came from ever so 'umble roots to blossom into something genuinely desirable. This metamorphosis took place in two phases. The first was in 2005, when the Sportage developed into a rebadged version of the Hyundai Tucson. Very good it was too, with an attractive sticker price. With plenty of stock to choose from, many with modest mileages, it's a solid used pick. In 2010 the Sportage was replaced by a far plusher car. If you're in the market for a nearly-new SUV, it's hard to find better value than this.
Also worth looking out for is the Picanto. A new model arrived in 2011 which has served to depress used valuations of the outgoing car in your favour. A facelift in the summer of 2007 softened the lines around the Picanto's front end and upgraded its interior with better quality plastics. The Ice launch edition model featured air-conditioning and a number of other features and looks to be the pick of that particular bunch. It's a properly cheap runabout.
