While it's a truism that there's no such thing as a cheap Ferrari, there are some models that are better used bargains than others. Don't look at the cheapest cars you'll find. The sort of £10,000 Ferrari 400s and Mondials you'll find just don't offer a whole lot. Neither are very quick and the 400 (and 412 successor) is ruinously expensive to maintain while the Mondial is plasticky and awkwardly styled. If you are on a budget, the best value may well be found in the Bertone shape of the 308 GT4. While this is still a car that will be outdragged by most hot hatches, values seem to be climbing.

Our thoughts on Ferrari used cars

The best value in Ferrari ownership at the moment seems to be one of the V12 models. Choose from the 550 Maranello or its 575M successor or, if you need the utility of a small pair of seats in the back, the mighty 612 Scaglietti. Of this lot, the 575M is probably the most attractive proposition, with examples available for about what you'd pay for a new BMW M3. Only built between 2002 and 2005, the 575M is at its best when fitted with the post-2004 GTC Handling Pack.

Of the more contemporary V8 cars, I'd avoid the underwhelming 348, and its 355 successor feels a little strong price-wise. The sweet spot for used buyers right at the moment is the 360 Modena, a far more modern proposition than the 355 and if you can find a decent one, they still feel tight and punchy. If you can find a Challenge Stradale model for sensible money, you'll have one of the greatest performance cars in recent times. My tip would be for a standard manual 360 coupe with a solid service record. You can thank me later.
