The idea of a bargain Lamborghini might be a bit of a stretch but when shopping for used example, while you won't find cheap, you will find some models that are smarter choices than others. The big seller in the Lamborghini line up is the Gallardo and although you can now get into one of the very first 2003 model year cars for less than £50,000, it's well worth stretching the budget a bit and angling for a 2006 model year example. Equipment levels improved, quality was tightened and the 520bhp engine that was previously the preserve of the special edition SE model became standard fare across the range. Oh, and a Spider convertible model was also launched. While the facelifted LP560-4 is a more rounded vehicle, these 2006-2008 Gallardo models offer probably the best value.

Our thoughts on Lamborghini used cars

Of course, there will be some who feel that a 'proper' Lamborghini needs a V12 engine and a spaceframe chassis and if you're of that persuasion, there are two cars that are well worth looking out for. The Diablo now seems a bit of a dinosaur compared to the slick precision of the latest Aventador, but the Diablo 6.0-litre models benefited from Audi's involvement in the build process. As a link between old-school Lamborghini and the modern generation, the Diablo 6.0 is absolutely fascinating. It's laced through with charisma and now looks to be the time to buy. Good examples will be on the rise soon.

The last of the Murcielago models, the awe-inspiring LP670-SV is another car that you won't lose your shirt on. This was the last of the spaceframe cars, the last with the classic Bizzarrini-designed V12 engine and the last V12 with a manual gearchange. Despite the tech that's built into this vehicle, it's still seriously hairy-chested and far more capable than a 'standard' LP640. It's not cheap but it's a collector's item in the making.
