Our thoughts on Ford used cars

We'll start with the Ford Kuga. Here is an excellent small 4x4 that failed to gain much traction with buyers because it was too small, too expensive and up against some fearsomely talented rivals. The used market isn't going to address the fact that the Kuga's a bit tight in the back, but it now looks properly good value, especially in diesel guise. If you can afford the juice, the rare 2.5T model, which uses much the same engine as the Ford Focus ST, is indecently quick and also offers serious tuning potential.

When a model is replaced, residual values of the outgoing car tend to take a dip. That's why the previous S-MAX looks such a good buy. The styling still looks fresh, but used prices have wilted a little, making it a great family choice. Another vehicle that punches above its price tag is the last of the Mondeo Mk3s, especially in estate guise. Here's a car that blends the agility of earlier Mondeo's with a useful amount of space and solid build quality to boot. The interior styling might not be the last word in effortless chic but if you need a no-nonsense mile-muncher, the big-hearted Mondeo is a good pick.
