It's roomy, it's fuel-efficient, it's immensely practical. And it's stylish, too. What is it? It's the Vauxhall Zafira. The first 7-seater people carrier to appear in the UK, the Zafira was given a facelift in 2016, and now it's bigger and better than ever. In fact, it's not easy to know where to start in describing the Zafira, as there are just so many options. We could go on for a week! But let's start with the engines. Basically, there are three to choose from - a 1.4L petrol engine (turbocharged), a 1.6L diesel and a 2.0L diesel representing the top of the range. Although the manual version is standard, you can also have an automatic with the two larger engines. And, when it comes to running costs, they all score pretty well, though the 1.6L version is especially economical, averaging 68.9mpg according to Vauxhall. It's also worth noting that Vauxhalls generally get nearer to their official figures than most competitors. Driving? Again, all the Zafiras give a smooth and comfortable ride, and none are underpowered - though if you regularly have the seats full, you may want to go for the 2.0L engine, which delivers a bit of extra push in urban areas. And, talking of seats, the Zafira offers plenty of head and leg room in its first two rows, though the centre seat is slightly narrower than the outer two, meaning that 3 adults can be a squeeze. Plus, there's no shortage of storage for bits and pieces, including nice big door bins. In short, if you're looking for a people carrier, the Zafira compares well with its rivals, scoring particularly well on space and equipment.
