Now in its fourth generation (it first appeared in 1995), the Megane is bigger than ever before. But is it better? Most reviewers say it is, with particular attention having been spent on improving the inside. This now boasts a classier and more upmarket look than any previous Megane, as well as several new features, such as an all-new infotainment system (which replaces the outdated R-Link system). Most experts agree that it's pretty good to drive, too, with a choice of four engines on offer (two diesel and two petrol), all of which deliver decent performance, good maneuverability in urban areas and light, confident handling. And the Megane isn't just a good driving experience, it's also very practical, offering a large boot, split-folding rear seats and a roomy cabin with lots of places to store odds and ends. Add to these points the fact that the Megane (and particularly the diesel models) is among the most efficient car in its class, and you have a car that competes extremely well with the other leaders in the sector, such as the VW Golf, the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Astra.

Back in 2004, Renault decided to flip the world of hot hatchbacks upside down with the introduction of a brand-new model based on the second-generation Megane. Dubbed the Megane Renault Sport II (or RS for short), it was one of the most aggressive, driver-oriented hatchbacks ever made. It was able to run rings around VW's Golf GTI and Ford's Focus ST without even breaking a sweat. It might not have been the most practical hot hatch, but it was definitely the most hardcore one. I never considered buying a megane, but when I did I was surprised. Not much to look at inside, but ok. Amazingly reliable, economical and a good all round car. Being 13 yr old I expected the worse but after 2yrs all Ive spent is money for fuel. At 50+ mpg Iv spent just under Â£600, in 2 yrs.. Read more
