Sometimes, you have to look below the surface to see the true value of something. And that's the case here, because, while the Mazda 2 looks expensive at first glance, compared with rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and Hyundai i20, a closer look reveals that its running costs are significantly lower, thanks to its highly efficient range of engines. The result is a car that competes very effectively on cost with others in its class. So, what are the engines that make the Mazda 2 so economical? Well, you can choose from four (3 x 1.5L petrol, 1 x 1.5L diesel), all of them delivering nippy performance, despite a slight tendency to feel unresponsive at low revs. But it's in terms of frugality that they really score. All the engines deliver 60+mpg (on paper, that is - it will be less in the real world) and the turbodiesel has a CO2 emissions level of just 89g/km. Which is tiny. As to the inside, the 2 may not have the class of rivals such as a VW Polo, but it's still a very decent quality, and it comes with a simply superb touchscreen-based infotainment system, available on SE-L versions and above. Plus, although it's not the most spacious supermini in the world, there's still a respectable amount of room, and the front seats are deliciously comfy.
