Introduced in 2007, the XF represented a definite break from anything Jaguar had built before, with a slightly futuristic feel, and an emphasis on aluminium rather than steel. As a result, it's lean and light and probably handles better than any other luxury saloon. Depending on the kind of performance you prefer, you can choose from a range of 2.0L and 3.0L petrol and diesel engines, all giving a gutsy performance - though none of them are class-leaders in this respect. As you might expect from any offering from Jaguar, comfort and refinement score pretty well, and the car is choc-full of advanced features, including a futuristic, touchscreen-based infotainment set-up, called InControl. With four trim levels on offer (Prestige, R-Sport, Portfolio and S), the XF can be made to suit a wide range of budgets, though it's worth noting that the top trim (only available on V6 models) is a whopping Â£10K more expensive than the next one down! Still, there's no doubt that the Jaguar XF is both competitively priced and well-equipped, though it will probably appeal more to business users.

A Great British executive express
The XFs job is to be a credible rival to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. Its a trick the cars predecessor, the S-Type, never quite managed to pull off, but this is an altogether different vehicle. It has the presence and grandeur of a modern executive express, and every model is a feast of high-tech gadgets. Most of all, though, the circles it moves in give it a lot to live up to on the road.
