What do you get when you take a prestige brand label and a high-quality interior, and put them together in a small, urban-friendly package? Answer: the Audi A1. Originally launched in 2010 in a three door version only, it rapidly became so popular that Audi now makes the model available as a 5- and 3-door version in a range of petrol and diesel engine sizes (1.2L - 2.0L), all with good economy ratings. Of course, if you're looking for a car which lets your passengers stretch out luxuriously in the back seats, you're going to be disappointed - though it has the edge on its main rival, the MINI hatch, when it comes to legroom. In fact, its compact size (it's a tad under 4m long and just 1.57m wide) makes parking in tight spaces a breeze, without having to worry too much about picking up those annoying little scratches. The A1's a good performer, too, offering a performance not far short of the range-topping S1 Quattro, and it's remarkably affordable for such an upmarket small car - though you could quickly break your budget if you go mad with optional extras!
