The days when the automotive world stifled a chuckle at the mention of the Skoda brand are long gone. The input of its Volkswagen Group owners transformed the Czech marque into a serious contender in the mainstream car market, with some highly desirable products are great value prices. Skoda used cars are held in similarly high esteem these days.
The more affordable way to by a used Skoda is the Fabia supermini. The Mk1 cars emerged in 1999 but it's far better for stretch to the Mk2 of 2007. With more individual styling and obvious links to the MK5 Volkswagen Polo, it's a roomy and sweet handling small car.
Pre-owned Skoda Octavias are also highly prized. This VW Golf-based hatch represents strong value for money as a used car as it did new. The sporty vRS versions use the engines from the equivalent Golf GTI models and are something of a performance bargain. Estates were also offered and the MK2 cars launched in 2004 came in 4x4 form.
Also well worth a look is the Skoda Superb executive saloon. Its foundations are that of the Volkswagen Passat but an extended wheelbase produces extremely generous rear legroom. Used second hand examples are conspicuously cheap and the second generation Superb features a novel rear tailgate marring the benefits of saloon and hatchback.
The Roomster supermini MPV is another popular Skoda second hand car with its simple, functional design and roomy cabin.
DRIVING A HARD BARGAIN You have to admire Skoda. As one of the world's oldest car companies, they've survived two World Wars, a communist dictatorship, an invasion or two and, worst of all, the darker side of the English sense of humour.
Officially, the company is now over one hundred years old, though to be fair, the Czech founders, bookseller Vaclav Klement and mechanic Vaclav Laurin, who set up business in 1895 making bicycles, didn't actually make their first automobile until 1905.
What isn't in doubt is that the company is now going through the brightest period in its history and it owes that to one car the Felicia, subsequently joined by the Octavia and now replaced by the fabialous Fabia supermini. The Felicia was on sale for six years, so there are a good few around on the used market at tempting prices.
