Renault Clio supermini has been a fixture at the top of the supermini market for a long time and there are numerous pre-owned examples around. The Clio II that arrived in 1997 and the Clio III from 2005 are the best bets these days, both fun to drive and the later model being unusually spacious for a supermini. Both the Clio and the Megane family hatch have spawned outstanding Renaultsport hot hatch back variants that are amongst the best of their kind on the second hand car market.
Renault also has a comprehensive range of MPVs kicking off with the compact Modus before extending through the Scenic to the roomy Espace. Lots of thought went into making these models as versatile and user-friendly as possible and it shows. Used versions of the Scenic are particularly common and buyers on a budget might also like to consider the Kangoo van-based MPV.
The really just leaves the Laguna in saloon or Sports Tourer estate guises, both commendable used cars, particularly in third generation form, and the smooth-riding Koleos 4x4.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE? The Renault Clio has established itself as one of the most stylish small cars around, certainly boasting a bit more high street chic than a Ford Fiesta or a Vauxhall Corsa. Many used buyers are confused by the seemingly impenetrable range of trim levels, but the basic formula is a better built supermini than its predecessor with a focus on interior space. As a used buy it’s a fair bet for all but the most enthusiastic driver, who would only really be advised to opt for the range topping Renaultsport Clio 172. Otherwise, an above average performance from Renault.
