Peugeot's model range is one of the easier line-ups for the used car buyer to find their way around thanks to its simple model naming strategy. The French brand has become synonymous with vibrant small cars down the years but more recently, steps have been taken to raise standards of refinement and quality across the range. Peugeot was also a pioneer of the folding hard-top roof technology that's caught on in a big way of late.
Second hand cars carrying the famous prancing lion badge kick off with the 106 but the 107 launched in 2005 is a more modern proposition and remains one of the best city cars around. Second hand car buyers might also encounter the unorthodox 1007, a rare city car MPV with sliding side doors.
Peugeot enjoyed phenomenal success with its 206 supermini up until 2006 when the 207 arrived on the scene. Available in three-door, five-door and SW estate guises, as well as with a folding hard top roof in 207 CC form, this is a substantial and stylish supermini.
Likewise, the 308 is one of the more sophisticated family hatchbacks on the market with a good variety of engine options available in the growing crop of used cars. Its 307 predecessor is also worthy of consideration by used second hand buyers.
Above these hatchbacks sits the 407, a worthy replacement for the long serving 406. The 407 is around in saloon, SW and coupe forms. It's a great way to buy a used Peugeot with plentiful supply keeping prices competitive. Pre-owned versions of the 4007 4x4 will be harder to come by.
FRENCH LESSONS The 405 was the French manufacturer's first attempt at a front-wheel drive mid-size car. It replaced the much-respected 505 and had quite a reputation to live up to. That it became a huge success for Peugeot is due mostly to a superb chassis plus strong and reliable mechanicals. There was also an incredibly wide model range that seemed to offer something for every niche of the family and company-car markets in which it competed.
The 405 saloon was replaced in 1996 by a similar looking model, the 406, though the new car was substantially changed. In the eight years that the 405 saloon was in production (the estate lived on into 1997 until the 406 version arrived), it helped Peugeot gain a big increase in UK market share. It also gave the company that elusive breakthrough into the fleet market, helped by assembling the 405 at Ryton to give it a 'Built in Britain' image.
