Italian manufacturer Fiat has made its name leaving the supercars to Ferrari and concentrating on models that most of us can afford to buy. Recent Fiat efforts have been characterised by stylish design and some particularly impressive diesel engines, helping them retain a strong following on the used car market.
Fiat has a strong tradition of citycars which can be traced from the Cinquecento to the Siecento and more recently, to the Panda and 500. Built on the same platform, the Panda and 500 are very different used cars. The Panda is comfortable and surprisingly roomy for its size while the 500 majors in cool retro design and is sought-after among younger buyers.
The Punto supermini is larger and has been extremely popular with UK buyers, so lots of used second hand models are about. The latest Grande Punto was launched in 2006 and matches clean Italianate lines with a sporty drive. With all these pre-owned small cars, seek out Fiat's 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engines for their excellent economy.
Larger Fiats have been less successful but highlights from the upper end of the range include the unorthodox 6-seat Multipla MPV, a very practical second hand car, and the latest Bravo family hatch launched in 2007. Either would be a great way to buy a used Fiat.
BARCH WORSE THAN ITS BITE The Fiat Barchetta has never been a popular sight on British roads, largely due to the fact that it is only available in left-hand drive form. Look beyond this and you’ll see a capable, attractively styled and well-engineered little roadster that’s more practical than many of its competitors. Based on proven Fiat Punto mechanicals, the Barchetta is also quite reasonable to run.
With the explosion in popularity of affordable roadsters, the Barchetta was somewhat steamrollered in the sales charts by the Mazda MX5, Rover MGF and BMW Z3, and has possibly suffered due to the fact that it shuns the ‘purist’ rear-wheel drive layout; its power going to the front wheels instead. The market that the Fiat has aimed for is more bar society than pure sports and it fills this niche quite well. A used Barchetta makes an interesting buy, and may cost less than you think.
