The decision made by BMW to produce a new version of the original Mini was a gamble but almost from the moment the new MINI hit the streets in 2001, it's a gamble that has paid off in spectacular style. The MINI remains one of the most desirable new cars on the market and is in similarly strong demand as a used car. Residual values are buoyant and as the growing range of models filters through onto the second hand car market, there's more and more choice.
The first generation MINI used cars you're most likely to encounter are the entry-level One, the Cooper and the Cooper S. There are also John Cooper Works editions that take the basic supercharged Cooper S model and render it even more sporty. There was also a MINI Convertible and a diesel powered MINI One D that returns very good economy.
The range of optional extras available means that people looking to buy a used MINI are unlikely to find two cars exactly the same. There are all kinds of different colour schemes and trim packages out there.
The second generation cars arrived in 2007, at which point the Cooper S performance model got a turbocharged engine and the Cooper D diesel was introduced. Interior quality and fuel economy were noticeably improved but the all-important looks were similar. The Clubman estate models were launched around this time and budget MINI First model arrived in 2009.
The MINI might not be the most practical small car but for style, a fun drive and tonnes of character, used second hand models are hard to beat.
