Small cars are hot at the moment and Suzuki knows more about small cars than most. The brand's more recent offerings are the ones to search out on the second hand car market and amongst these, buyers get a decent choice of compact family cars and 4x4 models.
The fifth generation Swift launched in 2004 was something of a breakthrough car for Suzuki. It's a little more compact than other mainstream superminis but its chunky styling and lively driving dynamics won it a strong following. Used car buyers can now pick up the Swift at very reasonable prices and the Swift Sport performance model is a good way of getting the most out of the car's adept chassis.
A more practical used car option is the Splash supermini MPV which arrived in 2008. Like the Swift, it's compact and good to drive but its taller shape provides a roomier feel in the cabin. As with most of Suzuki's recent efforts, the interior is sturdily built with simple control systems.
Suzuki's 4x4 range makes a solid pre-owned choice. The Jimny is a tough customer and one of the few small 4x4s that can really perform off-road. The SX4 is based on the same platform as Fiat's Sedici and is geared more for on-road use while retaining those chunky 4x4 looks. Above these sits the Grand Vitara. This is a larger model but it's not unwieldy and the 2006 model is only equivalent to compact 4x4 alternatives in size. Used cars should be about in reasonable numbers.
Now is a fine time to buy a used Suzuki with the brand's small car expertise particularly in demand. They aren't the most common models on the used second hand market but they are worth seeking out.
