The price has always been the key factor with Proton cars and while other brands have worked hard to break away from their budget roots, the Malaysian mark has seemed content to battle on at the lower end of the UK market. The new cars are cheap, so the second hand cars tend to be doubly so. You don't need a lot of cash to buy a used Proton.
Proton has been the proud owner of Lotus cars since 1996 and has employed the expertise of the famous British sportscar brand to good effect in honing the driving dynamics of its models. It means that Protons like the Savvy city car and Satria supermini are more fun to drive than you might expect. The Proton Satria GTi is particularly adept and very affordable these days on the used car market.
The Satria Neo is arguably Proton's most convincing model to date and was launched to replace the Satria in 2006. All models have a sporty feel and sharp styling and while build quality isn't the greatest, it's a pre-owned model that would be a good first car option for younger drivers.
The GEN-2 is a larger Proton somewhere between the mainstream supermini and family hatch classes in size. New car buyers are immensely loyal to the Malaysian company’s products and it’s easy to understand the reasons why. The Compact/Satria, for example, is a medium-sized family hatch at a supermini price.
