The famous Maserati trident has rested in the hands of quite a few owners down the years but since 1993, the Fiat Group has been in overall possession. The brand, known for its luxurious sportscars and saloons, has been shifted around within the Fiat empire, first aligned with Fiat itself, then with Ferrari in the late 1990s before being transferred to Alfa Romeo in 2005. The small and exclusive model range has flourished in recent years and the cars enjoy a higher profile in the minds of second hand car buyers as a result.
For those unwilling to venture back to the classic Maserati models of the 60s and 70s, the 3200GT coupe is a sensible place for a used car search to start. Launched in 1998 with its distinctive boomerang-shaped rear light clusters, the front engined two-seater was powered by a punchy twin turbo V8 with a 3.2-litre capacity. The Maserati Coupe replaced this model in 2005 with similar looks and a 4.2-litre normally aspirated V8, leading some to refer to it as the 4200GT. Both of these models are relatively widely available as used cars.
One of the most capable and beautiful Maseratis for a long time arrived in 2007 in the shape of the GranTurismo. It's a 2+2 coupe with a 4.2-litre V8 that's bored out to 4.7-litres in GranTurismo S guise. Prices for pre-owned versions are still on the high side but this is one of the best received Maseratis for some time.
The other model that used second hand buyers might consider is the Quattroporte or four-door. The fifth generation car to carry the name was launched in 2004 and remains one of the most elegant luxury saloons around. It's a stylish and quite understated way to buy a used Maserati.
