Saab is a car manufacturer with style, individuality and heritage but one which has recently suffered through a lack of direction and investment. There's little doubt that owners General Motors could have made more of Saab, giving it more ammunition to challenge the German hegemony in the UK's premium car markets. As it was, the Swedish brand soldiered on with its two product lines, ultimately making a decent fist of a difficult situation.

The first Saab 9-3 was launched in 1998, a compact executive hatchback with strong safety credentials and underpinnings shared with the Vauxhall Vectra. The second generation 9-3 was launched in 2003 with sharper styling and an upgraded interior. Saloon, Sport Wagon estate and Convertible models were available.
