With its close links to the Ford Motor Company, Mazda has access to some high class vehicle platforms and advanced engines but it would be wrong to think of marque's recent models simply as rebadged Fords. Mazda has cleverly chosen which technology to borrow, being careful to give all of its cars their own identity.
Used car buyers have a wide selection of highly competent Mazdas to choose from, the most iconic of which has to be the MX-5 roadster. This car is very much Mazda's own work and has been hugely popular throughout its various generations. Many of the older used cars you'll encounter will be Japanese imports but that's not necessarily a reason to avoid them.
Second hand car buyers seeking a more aggressive sportscar package might also be interested in the RX-8. This is another pure Mazda product with its ingenious rotary engine and four-seater layout.
The Mazda2 supermini and its 121 predecessor are closely related to their equivalent Ford Fiestas. They're far less commonplace than the Fords though and the latest models in particular make distinctive and enjoyable purchases with their sporty looks and alert handling. By the same token, the Mazda3 hatch is a relative of the Ford Focus and then there's the Mazda6 which offers similar qualities to the Ford Mondeo and is a popular used second hand choice.
By a used Mazda5 and you'll be getting a very under-rated compact MPV with sliding side doors to aid access to its rear seats. A pre-owned early CX-7 4x4 will be hard to come by and expensive to run with its powerful petrol engine but lots of equipment, a low price and feisty performance might persuade some.
SMALL AND SENSIBLE Ironic isn’t it, that what was once viewed as the most avant-garde supermini you could buy became the most conformist available. Mazda’s 121 was once the car that everyone in the supermarket carpark stopped to look at. But later models were lost amongst all the other Ford Fiestas found there.
The reason for this was that in 1996, the 121 became, well, a Ford Fiesta. Badges and minor styling tweaks apart, it was almost exactly the same as the Blue Oval’s bestseller. It was even built on the same Dagenham production line.
All of which was no bad thing. The equivalent Fiesta was a class-leader, which should make the Mazda an excellent secondhand bet.
