In this article weíre looking at the 2018 Audi A7 Sportback. Itís a big car for those that donít want a full-on limousine like the similarly sized Audi A8 but rather something a bit more rakish and swish looking.
The A7 is Audiís rival to the Mercedes Benz CLS as well as cars like the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe and even the Porsche Panamera. The 2018 incarnation is Audiís second generation of the A7 and it gets some funky sharp lines as well as a sweepish all-in-one rear light. For Audi, which have been notoriously conservative in its styling, the A7 is pretty extravagant to say the least.
The interior is similarly daring for Audi and immensely well put together. Seriously, other car makers should really take note as to how you design interiors with great quality material and excellent build quality. In the top spec edition you get all of the tech such as a fighter jet style head-up display to a virtual dashboard which replaces traditional instruments and also a 10.1 inch touchscreen. By the way, you also get an 8.6 inch touchscreen underneath the main one. The updated infotainment system from Audi looks really impressive although it can be quite easy to get lost in some of the menus. Thereís more space in the cabin than the old model and the rear seats have even more room for taller adults. According to Audi the boot space is big enough to hold two golf bags laid side on Ė so now you know.
Audi says that the A7 has been designed to balance comfiness and sportiness so letís start with comfort. There are four suspension set-ups available on the A7. The top spec model has the most expensive set-up which is the air suspension set-up which you can flick between comfort and dynamic mode. When you drive in comfort mode you find that even though itís far from uncomfortable that thereís a little bit more information coming up from the road than you need or want. Ok, this is a minor niggle but when the rest of the car is so well judged everywhere else then this does stand out quite a bit. We also worry what it would be like on our nasty British B-roads. Saying that itís very quiet in the cabin and extremely comfortable. With regards to the engine line-up, there are two V6 units available, one being a petrol and the other a diesel. Both are strong but very quiet as well.
On the subject of sportiness, the A7ís clever suspension set-up does help this car corner well especially considering itís such a big car. However, the steering lacks a little bit of that directness that youíd want for a really involving drive. Youíll unlikely feel the urge to push this car really hard and youíre not going to get too many rewards even if you do so. The A7 is a car thatís much happier to cruise along and this is helped by all manner of self-driving technologies. Technologies from clever adaptive cruise control to steering assist which will essentially drive the car for you.
You shouldnít be fooled by the word Sport in the A7ís Sportbackís name because this is not a particularly sporty car. Instead itís a car that should be considered as a plush luxurious machine loaded with the latest technology. All of this makes it more comfortable cruising than driving with exuberance.
